Warsaw is receiving the participants in the 56th autumn session of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly from the 12th to the 16th of November. Among them are 220 MPs from 28 NATO member-states, delegates from partner states and numerous observers. The agenda of the forum, taking place ahead of the Lisbon summit, is extensive. A special place in it belongs to issues of “the growing importance of partnership” in the alliance and “new membership prospects”.As for partnership and candidates for membership, the alliance has plenty of “friends”. All of them are members of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council, set up in 1997. Practically all former republics of the Soviet Union are members of that structure. The total number of members of the Council is 50, NATO member-states included. Besides those, there are also the so-called contact countries, situated beyond the North-Atlantic space. Relations with them are built on a bilateral basis. They are Australia, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand. Source: Voice of Russia. |
