From Colombia to Vietnam: The Success of an Innovative School Model

“My child is more self-confident and creative, has increased communication skills, and is taking initiative.” This is what the parent of a student at Dong Hoang Primary School in Vietnam said. The school uses the Escuela Nueva model. Students no longer sit facing the teacher and are lectured by the teacher. Now children are seated in groups of 4-6 at tables and the teacher talks amongst the groups. Each table has a rotating student leader who helps initiate the group discussions and group work. The VNEN approach of promoting small group peer-learning and problem solving is helping to develop life-long positive attitudes, such as initiative, creativity, self-esteem, self-reliance, responsibility, social and communication skills, and self-confidence. What Does Robert Capa’s Close Enough Rule Mean Today?

Kép
In honor of Robert Capa's 100th birthday, the ICP and Magnum Photos has launched an online project called "Get Closer 100." In this PDN article, Ed Kashi comments on Capa's imagery. “Conflict photographers of today are obsessed with only the agony, graphic violence and misery. Capa recorded those qualities with a quiet dignity, but he was also able to capture happiness. He was capable of portraying life in it’s full range of emotions, not just misery and death.” What Does Robert Capa’s “Close Enough” Rule Mean Today?

The names of Nelson Mandela

Former South African President Nelson Mandela, remembered as an anti-apartheid leader, the first black president of South Africa, AIDS activist, and “hero for the world” died today at age 95. Mandela was instrumental in guiding his country out of the apartheid era by shaping South Africa into a multi-racial democracy while helping avoid an outright civil war. He spent nearly three decades behind bars as a political prisoner for agitating against white minority rule in the country, and he won a Nobel Peace Prize in 1993. He later became an advocate for a unified response to the AIDS epidemic in Africa, speaking out against the cultural stigma burdening those infected with the virus. "I leave it to the public to decide how they should remember me," he said in one of his last public appearances. "But I should like to be remembered as an ordinary South African who together with others has made his humble contribution."

The Human Capital Report

"In Pakistan, a child has about a 35% chance of making it into secondary school and 8% of eventually making it into university. If the child is female, those chances are even less... Imagine the losses for society as a whole." Watch Saadia Zahidi present our new Human Capital Report, which looks at how well different countries develop their citizens' skills and talents through indicators ranging from education to healthcare. The report can help governments, investors and civil society understand what they need to do to create the talented, thriving workforce of tomorrow. http://wef.ch/f2pNN How can we improve access to education and support the innovative professionals of the future?

Robert Capa was one of the greatest war photographers

Kép
Robert Capa was one of the greatest war photographers of the 20th century and founder of the famous photo agency, Magnum.   But did you know that the Hungarian-born photojournalist was also a refugee?   Born Endre Friedman, he first had to flee his native Hungary at the age of 17, after demonstrating against the fascist regime of Miklós Horthy. For two years he found safety in Germany but he had to escape again after Hitler came to power. His family and friends he had left behind in Hungary, died in Nazi concentration camps. Capa sought refuge in France and dedicated his life to portraying the range of emotions during war and people’s attempts to retain normality. Just like Capa, today still millions are forced to flee their homes, persecuted for their religion, nationality, race, political opinion or belonging to a particular social group.  photo : © Gerda Taro

CHARLI Robot Gangnam Style

Kép
The CHARLI series humanoid robot is developed as a research platform to study bipedal walking and autonomous behaviors for humanoid robots. It is designed to be ultra light weight (under 15 kgs) for safety and low cost. As the next generation of the CHARLI series humanoid robots, CHARLI-2 improves stability and speed in walking, intelligence and autonomy, and soccer playing skills. CHARLI-L2 is also designed to participate in the autonomous robot soccer competition, RoboCup, in the Adult size league. CHARLI-2 implements an impressive active stabilization strategy based on sensory feedback (filtered IMU angles, gyro rate readings and proprioception information based on joint encoders.) Stabilizing torques at the ankle joints are applied based on this information, and successful ly rejects external disturbances. CHARLI-2 is honored "2011 Best Invention of the Year" by Time magazine, won the Louis Vuitton Best Humanoid Award (a.k.a. Louis Vuitton Cup) at RoboCup 2011, and won F
