Robert Capa was one of the greatest war photographers of the 20th century and founder of the famous photo agency, Magnum.
But did you know that the Hungarian-born photojournalist was also a refugee?
Born Endre Friedman, he first had to flee his native Hungary at the age of 17, after demonstrating against the fascist regime of Miklós Horthy. For two years he found safety in Germany but he had to escape again after Hitler came to power. His family and friends he had left behind in Hungary, died in Nazi concentration camps.
Capa sought refuge in France and dedicated his life to portraying the range of emotions during war and people’s attempts to retain normality.
Just like Capa, today still millions are forced to flee their homes, persecuted for their religion, nationality, race, political opinion or belonging to a particular social group.
