Waste land ... rotting oranges stretch to the horizon in California

Shocking images: a waste no knows boundaries

Rotten waste And food chucked away in households in this country alone could feed 113million people. Sainsbury's send an estimated 60,000 tons of food waste to landfill sites each year. His investigation discovered: 30 per cent of potatoes - nearly one in every three that are sold - are discarded in Britain. British farms and processors produce just under one million tons of potato waste each year - or one sixth of the national supply of spuds. Meanwhile, households waste another 358,000 tons. Between 40 per cent and 60 per cent of all fish caught around Europe are thrown back into the sea. Greenpeace estimates that of the 186million fish caught in UK waters 117million are thrown back dead - many because they are too small, the wrong species or part of a quota the fishermen are not allowed to land. There are 900million malnourished people in the world. All of them could be lifted out of hunger with a fraction of the food wasted. "Efficiency measures could create enormous savings, help the fight against hunger and guarantee food for future generations."
